Dothan City Manager, Mike West, has a good feeling about 2014.
“I think there are a lot of positive things and I think people should be proud to live in Dothan because I am,” said West.
Why the uplifting spirit?
It’s because of the newly released sales and lodging tax collection numbers. They show a substantial growth from 2012.
“It means that we are ahead of our budget if we continue, I think it also reflects more people have jobs,” explained West. “I think it shows that we have had some positive retail development over the past year.”
According to the numbers, November 2013 sales tax collections saw an eight percent increase over November 2012. Lodging tax collections were also up.
“More people are coming to Dothan and staying in our hotels. Again positive because a lot of our lodging tax funds, while a lot of it goes to the city part of it also goes to the convention and visitors bureau to promote tourism to the Dothan area.”
But there’s more to the report than just numbers.
“Right now we are ahead of budget so as long as we stay on a growth line that is normal, I mean eight percent for November over the previous year is significant gain and something we normally don’t see,” said West. “That is significant so if we can keep our growth modest, then we can maintain our budget.”
Meaning a more comfortable New Year for the City.
