A race in San Jose, California, this weekend took on an unexpected patriotic turn.

World War II veteran Joe Bell stood in his front yard in uniform clapping and cheering on the runners.

What started out with just clapping back turned into racers running on the sidewalk to shake Bell's hand and thank him for his service.

Video of the moment has gone viral.

The race raises money for a foundation dedicated to a fallen Army Ranger.
