Run, Hide, Fight: What to do During a Workplace Shooting

Mass shootings can happen anywhere, at any time. And people caught in the crossfire usually have no idea how to protect themselves.

"These incidents are fortunately very, very rare....but they're not impossible."

This video, released by the Houston Texas mayor's office of public safety and homeland security, is designed to instruct you on exactly what to do when someone starts shooting up your workplace.
It's centered around a simple phrase to help save lives....

"Run, Hide, Fight. The first instinct is to hide. And as we clearly say in the video, the first thing you need to do is get the heck out of there."

While your first reaction should be to run...

"Be sure not to skip the second step before deciding to fight. When hiding remember to..."

Lock or blockade the door, silence your phone, hide behind large objects, and remain very quite.

"You don't want to stop and analyze. It's, 'I know what to do.' And it's automatic."

"If you know this, you don't have to think about your reaction, you just have to perform."

Heath also says thinking ahead of time is key to good preparation.

"As long as people are aware of their surroundings and they know what's going on and how to react...Where's the nearest exit to where you're sitting? How many exits are in the building where you are? Things of that nature are things to watch for."

If the video saves just one life, Houston’s governor says, it will have been worth it.
