WASHINGTON, D.C. – Voting in favor of legislation to delay for one year the individual mandate portion of President Obama’s healthcare law, U.S. Representative Martha Roby (R-AL) said it is only fair to give individual Americans the same relief from the tax mandate that businesses are set to receive.
The Obama Administration announced July 2 it would delay until 2015 enforcement of the Affordable Care Act’s employer mandate, which requires businesses with 50 or more employees to offer healthcare coverage or face tax penalties. The Fairness for American Families Act, passed by the House today, offers the same extension to all Americans who are still subject to an individual tax mandate under the law beginning January 1, 2014.
Rep. Roby said all Americans should be granted relief from the complicated law, not just big businesses.
“In delaying the employer mandate, but not the individual mandate, the President is choosing to protect big businesses from ObamaCare, but not hardworking individuals and families. Why is big business getting a big break while individual Americans get the short end of the stick?
“In explaining the employer mandate delay, White House officials repeatedly said the President was ‘listening’ to business. Well, it is time the President listened to the American people. Ordinary Americans may not have high-powered lobbyists, but they do have the House of Representatives, and today we took action to offer individuals the same relief offered to big businesses.”
The House today also passed H.R. 2667, The Authority for Mandate Delay Act. Because the legal authority the Obama Administration used to delay implementation of the employer mandate is dubious, legislation was needed to codify the delay, lest lawsuits put those seeking insurance at a disadvantage.
Amazingly, President Obama threatened to veto this legislation, despite the fact that it simply codifies his own executive action. Rep. Roby called the veto threat “awfully hypocritical.”
“It is awfully hypocritical for President Obama to threaten to veto a bill that simply gives legal authority to his own executive action. It further illustrates this Administration’s offensive disdain for our 200-year old system of checks and balances.”
