Roby: Defense Cuts Hurt Military, Threaten National Security

By  |

WASHINGTON, D.C. – U.S. Representative Martha Roby today joined House Armed Services Committee Chairman Howard “Buck” McKeon and other committee colleagues to speak out against continued dangerous cuts that hurt the military and threaten national security.

Arbitrary, across-the-board spending cuts known as sequestration are set to go into effect at midnight, with the lion’s share targeting the military budget. At a Capitol Hill news conference, Roby blasted President Obama for using the threat of military sequestration cuts to campaign for another tax increase.

· “We can’t tax our way out of the sequester, and we can’t tax our way out of debt,” Rep. Roby said. “There’s a mom down near Fort Rucker, Alabama right now wondering why Washington can’t fix its spending problem without threatening her ability to put food on the table. And it is unconscionable that President Obama is using military families as pawns in his crusade for higher taxes.”

Rep. Roby has maintained that the country cannot afford to continue slashing the military while ignoring the true cause of rising debt: mandatory spending.

“The day we were told would never come is here,” Rep. Roby said. “Sequestration is going into effect, and the military is going to bear the brunt. There’s no question we need to rein in spending and reduce the size of the federal government. However, hollowing out our military while ignoring the true cause of our fiscal problems is the wrong way to do it. Everyone knows the true driver of our long-term debt is mandatory spending, not the military budget.”

Rep. Roby voted against the August 2011 Budget Control Act that threatened the sequester military cuts and has repeatedly spoken out about the potential harm the cuts pose to military readiness and national security. Since then, the House has voted twice to replace the President’s sequester plan with smarter, more responsible spending cuts based on real budget priorities.

Rep. Roby is chair of the House Armed Services Subcommittee on Oversight and Investigations.
