MONTGOMERY, Ala. (AP) -- Alabama's Republican Party has refused to change its rules to silence dissent after a college Republican chairwoman upset some older members by supporting gay marriage. The State Republican Executive Committee voted overwhelmingly today in Montgomery.
OPELIKA, Ala. (AP) -- A one-time business partner of former Auburn University football coach Tommy Tuberville has pleaded guilty in a financial fraud. Forty-two-year-old John David Stroud of Auburn is accused of defrauding investors out of millions of dollars between 2008 and 2012.
MONTGOMERY, Ala. (AP) -- Alabama Attorney General Luther Strange says he is stepping aside from an investigation his office is conducting in Lee County. Strange won't say why he is distancing himself from the investigation. Records show the review is being handled by an assistant to Strange who typically is involved in cases involving public corruption.
JACKSONVILLE, Fla. (AP) -- A Northeast Florida man faces an attempted murder charge after allegedly beating a 9-year-old girl in a Best Buy restroom.
Jacksonville area TV station First Coast News reports that police have arrested 29-year-old James Patrick Tadros in the assault.
Authorities say Tadros lured the girl into the women's bathroom of a Jacksonville Best Buy Friday night. Police say he then punched and kicked her and put a plastic bag over her head while holding her down in the toilet.
A customer heard the girl's screams, entered the restroom and helped stop the attack.
The girl is being treated at University of Florida Health hospital. Police say Tadros did not know the young girl. Authorities described the attack as an isolated random incident.
BOCA RATON, Fla. (AP) -- A South Florida high school teacher faces a criminal charge after she allegedly used Facebook to solicit sex from students. Stevie Glasspool has been charged with soliciting a child for unlawful sexual conduct using a computer.

AUGUSTA, Ga. (AP) -- Some valuable hair is reported missing from a beauty supply business in Augusta. Police say three men stole $20,000 worth of hair extensions from the Hair Depot after prying open a door.
BRUNSWICK, Ga. (AP) -- Brunswick police say eight people had to be hospitalized after smoking a form of synthetic marijuana. Three people had to be treated in intensive care, and the five others were released. All the smokers were between 16 and 25 years of age.
MILTON, Ga. (AP) -- A youth softball coach will avoid prison after pleading guilty to claims that he sent lewd text messages to a 15-year-old girl. A judge sentenced 36-year-old Robert Keith Payne of Cumming to five years of probation after he pleaded guilty to enticing a child for indecent purposes.
