MONTGOMERY, Ala. (AP) -- A rally planned for Alabama's Capitol will protest government actions that critics say violate the barrier between church and state.
The Montgomery Area Freethought Association said its rally will begin Saturday afternoon at 1 p.m.
The speakers include the regional director of American Atheists, the executive director of the Alabama ACLU and a Democratic candidate for governor.
Al.com (http://bit.ly/1mmykz2 ) reports that rally organizers object to several pieces of legislation, including a bill that would require state teachers to read the opening prayers of Congress. They also have concerns about separate legislation that would allow health care providers to refuse to perform abortions or stem cell research on religious grounds.
