Puzzles & Corn Chips: The Unusual Holidays of January 29th

Two unofficial holidays celebrate puzzles and a certain type of chip on January the 29th in the United States.

“National Puzzle Day” celebrates puzzles of all kinds—jigsaw, crossword, even the more modern Sudoku. Puzzles have been said by some to keep the mind fresh and even prevent mental decay later in life. The specific origin of the day is not known.

“National Corn Chip Day” celebrates chips. While chips made from potatoes are among the most popular, corn-based chips are commonly used with salsa, cheese or by themselves. “Fritos,” a very popular brand of corn chips in the United States of America, first hit the market in 1932.

Neither of these holidays are recognized by the US congress, and are thus considered unofficial.
