Russian opposition activists gathered in central Moscow on Sunday for a march against the "Dima Yakovlev law" banning the adoptions of Russian children by US families.

Around 9,500 people took part in the protest, according to police.

Demonstrators marched from Strastnoy Boulevard to Sakharov Prospect carrying portraits of State Duma deputies who voted for the law.

Leading opposition figures Alexey Navalny, Mikhail Kasyanov, Vladimir Ryzkov, Boris Nemtsov, Grigory Yavlinsky and Sergey Udaltsov took part.

At least nine activists were arrested.

The "Dima Yakovlev law" is Russia's response to the US Magnitsky Act, which blacklists Russian officials suspected of involvement in the 2009 death of anti-corruption lawyer Sergey Magnitsky and others accused of human rights violations.
