Private School Tax Credits to Apply to Current Private School Students Under Bill

MONTGOMERY, Ala. (AP) -- A state Senate committee has approved a bill to ensure Alabama's new private school tax credits apply to students already in private schools.

The Senate Education Committee voted 6-3 Wednesday for a bill by Republican Sen. Del Marsh of Anniston that would clarify the new Alabama Accountability Act. The act provided state tax credits for parents who chose to enroll their children in a private school rather than a public school rated as failing. The State Department of Education interpreted the bill to apply to students who move from public schools to private schools in the future.

Marsh's bill makes sure parents who have already enrolled their children to private school get the tax credit. Republicans supported the bill and Democrats opposed it. The bill now goes to the Senate.
