Powerball Jackpot Nears $450 Million as Numbers are Drawn

The winning numbers for the Powerball Jackpot are in. The lucky ticket-holder will take away nearly $450 million. As the winnings grew into the day, ticket-buyers lined convenience stores in Florida. Everyone standing in line hoped their ticket would be the lucky one.

If the stars aligned and so did the numbers from your ticket, how would you react to winning $450 million dollars? Burdell Hughes, of Ozark, said a sum that great would be too much to handle.

"'I'd have a heart attack and die," jokes Hughes. "And all my kids would get it."

With 6 kids, 3 stepchildren, 27 grand kids, and 26 great-grand kids, there is plenty of room for Burdell to spread the love. She's not the only one with family on her mind.

Paul Bradley of Ariton says he would use the money to settle finances for his relatives. "My family, their bills would be paid, houses would be paid off," Bradley says, "and I'd find people who were struggling to get by and help them out."

Susan Owens says she would start just by taking a break. "I am in need of a vacation. I'd probably go see my son; I haven't seen him in about 5 years. He's in Minnesota," she explains.

Even if they don't get the Jackpot, many say buying a chance at millions is a reward in itself.

"It's exhilarating sometimes," Bradley says. "Most of the time they look at me strange because I only want one ticket."

But one ticket is all it takes.

One Dothan woman believes a win is in the stars. "Today is actually my 23rd birthday and I got a Powerball ticket that has the number 23 on it," says LaPorsha Godwin.
"So I'm feeling lucky."

If LaPorsha and other Powerball players aren't lucky enough to have a winning combination for the drawing, lottery officials say we would be in "world record territory" going into Saturday's drawing.

Winning ticket holders aren't the only ones with something to gain from a giant jackpot like this one. Stores selling the tickets get a big boost in business when players line up for a chance to win. The world's highest lottery jackpot was a $656 million Mega Millions Jackpot in March of 2012.
