TALLAHASSEE – Player excitement nationwide is soaring for this weekend’s Powerball® game which now boasts a record-high $600 million jackpot. Prior to this jackpot, the record Powerball jackpot was $587.5 million set in November 2012. Even occasional and first-time lottery players are beginning to imagine the possibilities.

“Florida is one of the top-selling states for Powerball with the largest number of winners since joining the game in 2009. We hope our players’ luck continues this weekend and that Florida has the next big jackpot winner!” said Secretary O’Connell. “Powerball ticket sales will benefit Florida’s students and schools and help our retailers grow their businesses to positively impact our state’s economy.”

When the new Powerball game went on sale January 15, 2012, players responded to bigger jackpots, more $1 million and $2 million prizes, and better chances to win any prize.

“The Multi-state Lottery Association encourages all players to play responsibly. Enjoy the thrill of what could be, but only spend within your means,” says Norman Lingle, Executive Director of the South Dakota Lottery and Chairman of the Powerball Game Group. Players must be 18 or older to play.

Among the most important safety tips, players should always to sign the back of their tickets and to keep them in a safe place. Winners should seek financial and legal advice to make plans to enjoy their new winning experience. “Don’t forget to check your ticket for other prizes,” adds Lingle, “Powerball has eight other ways to win a cash prize, ranging from $4 to $2 million with Power Play.”

Powerball jackpots start at $40 million and roll until the jackpot is won. Players win by matching the five white ball numbers (1-59) and the red Powerball number (1-35). There are eight other ways to win non-jackpot prizes ranging from $4 to $1 million or up to $2 million if the ticket includes Power Play. The overall odds of winning a prize in the game are approximately 1 in 31.
