(Dothan, AL)--For Dothan postmaster, Bill Elliot, when it comes to budget cuts and nationwide job losses in post offices, he wants people maintain focus on Congress.

“The internal workers of the postal office are controlled by congress that's the first thing we need people to understand, “Dothan Postmaster Bill Elliot said.

In other words, sites like savethepostoffice.com and rallies for postal reform are helpful, but won't solve the bigger problem.

“Once people begin to realize that congress controls postal reform that's, when they’ll become concerned, “Elliot said. “Post Offices everywhere have to wait for any law or congressional action before we can do anything,” he said.

Like most post office employees, Elliot supports House Resolution 13-51, which could solve many of the financial struggles within the postal service, especially in one specific area.

“The sanctions that congress put on the post office in 2006, has forced the postal service to plan ahead the retirement and health benefits for employees 75 years in advance,” Elliot said. “That sanction has crushed us financially because it costs around six billion dollars a year,” he said.

Elliot doesn't know what will happen at the Dothan Post Office in the near future, but he does know one thing.

“We appreciate the business from the public and we're going to do the best that we can do nationwide,” Elliot said. “We would we like to see everything stay as it is, yes we would, but is it a viable option, no it's not,” He said.

Postal workers don't want tax payers to bail out the postal service and haven't received tax money in nearly thirty years.
