After well over a century in business, Porter Hardware in Dothan has closed its doors.
It stood among the oldest operating hardware stores in the state. Edwin Russell Porter and Joel D. Murphree set up shop on Main Street in 1889.
That's just four years after Dothan became incorporated.
It was a place where train passengers could stock up on goods when they came through town. Skilled workers were also regulars..
Stopping by to pick up supplies throughout the day.
In more recent years.
The store struggled as demand went down... And hardware chains moved into Dothan. Porter purchased the lot for $300.
