Police Charge Man in Fatal Birmingham Shooting

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. (AP) -- Police have charged a 33-year-old Birmingham man with capital murder, attempted murder and shooting into an occupied dwelling in a shooting that left a 63-year-old man dead.

The Birmingham News reports that Charles Debruce, who was also injured in the shootout, was taken into custody Monday.

Police say Debruce killed William James Evans at Evans' home just before 6 p.m.

Police say a man arrived at Evans' home and got into a fight with someone there.

Evans came outside and fired a gun at the suspect.

The suspect, who was described as a family friend, shot back.

Evans was hit in the abdomen and his wife, Juliette, was hit in the hip.

A hospital spokesman says Juliette Evans was listed in fair condition.
