Parts of southern and eastern Florida are now under Tropical Storm Watches due to the potential impact of Tropical Storm Sandy.
Just before 4am Wednesday morning, the National Hurricane Center in Miami placed the following locations in Florida under a Tropical Storm Watch: The east coast from Jupiter Inlet to Flamingo, the Upper Keys from Ocean Reef to Craig Key and Florida Bay.
A Tropical Storm Watch means the Tropical Storm conditions are possible in the areas under the watch within the next two days. These include dangerous surf, choppy waves, and winds from 40 to 73 miles per hour, as well as heavy rain and isolated tornadoes.
As of 4am, Tropical Storm Sandy had picked up speed and was moving faster towards Jamaica, which is under a Hurricane Warning. Sustained winds in the strongest part of the storm were at 70 miles per hour, just shy of Hurricane strength. However, a NOAA buoy to the east of the storm reported a gust of 74 miles per hour, which is hurricane strength.
