Panhandle Man Gets Life for Fatal Robbery

DeFUNIAK SPRINGS, Fla. (AP) -- A Florida Panhandle man has been sentenced to life in prison for a fatal robbery.

A Walton County judge sentenced 36-year-old Daryl Wade Mayatte on Tuesday. He was convicted in December of second-degree murder and first-degree attempted murder.

Prosecutors say Mayatte was seeking drugs in March 2011 when he went to rob the home of Alceno Pacheco and Rafael Rojas. When Mayatte found no drugs or property to steal, he shot Pacheco and Rojas four times each.

Pacheco died at the scene, but Rojas was able to call 911 and receive medical treatment.

The Northwest Florida Daily News reports that Mayatte initially fled to Mississippi but turned himself in two days after the shooting.
