Overnight Threat for Freezing Rain in Northern Alabama

12:09AM UPDATE: The Winter Weather Advisory for the following counties has been extended through 3pm Tuesday -- Lauderdale, Colbert, Franklin, Limestone. All other counties are unchanged at this time. Full details below.

------------------------------

Parts of Northern Alabama could see a threat for freezing rain overnight into Tuesday morning.

A Winter Weather Advisory is in effect for much of North Alabama, including the cities of Huntsville, Jasper, Cullman, Muscle Shoals and many surrounding communities through 9am Tuesday morning.

The primary threat will be freezing rain. As early as 11pm, there were already reports of freezing rain in the advisory area. The National Weather Service estimates that accumulations of a tenth to two-tenths of an inch will be possible across these areas in northern Alabama as temperatures range from between 30 and 34 degrees.

Some sleet could mix in with the freezing rain as well, but no accumulation of sleet is expected by forecasters.

South of the advisory area, for places like Birmingham and Tuscaloosa, all precipitation should fall in the form of rain. No winter weather threat currently exists for the News 4 coverage area.

  • Cullman, AL
  • Muscle Shoals, AL
