The eastern diamondback rattlesnake, the largest and possibly most dangerous snake in Georgia, is one of only six venomous snake species in the state. Positive identification and common sense go a long way toward protecting outdoors enthusiasts when they are afield in snake country.
In a week, the 55th-annual Opp Rattlesnake Rodeo will be held. The two-day event is expected to draw anywhere from 30-to-50 thousand visitors to Covington County.
With so much on the line, Opp Mayor H.D.. Edgar says the town is spending five-thousand dollars on weather insurance for this year's festival which runs April first and second.
The insurance would be used in the event rain cancels part, or the entire event. The policy will cover approximately 100-thousand dollars in losses.
