Ohio Man Dies after Snorkeling in Gulf

An Ohio vacationer died Thursday in an apparent drowning while attempting to snorkel off jetties on the east side of the Destin Pass.

Crews from the Destin Coast Guard were called to the scene around 1:15 p.m Thursday.

Lifesaving efforts were made after 62-year old Daniel Akers of Stoutsville Ohio was pulled from the water. He was taken to the Coast Guard Station and then transported to Fort Walton Beach Medical Center where he was later pronounced dead.

An autopsy will be conducted by the Medical Examiner’s Office.
