Rep. Roby on Immigration Overhaul

It was a packed house in Las Vegas Tuesday, as President Obama made his push for an immigration overhaul.

" We all know that today we have an immigration system that's out of date and badly broken, a system that's holding us back instead of helping us grow our economy and strengthen our middle class," he said.

He is calling for a pathway to citizenship for millions of illegal immigrants, improvements to the legal immigration system, and an easier way for employers to verify the status of workers.

During a visit to the Wiregrass, U.S. Representative Martha Roby said it's time for an overhaul, but they need to start with existing legislation.

" There has clearly been a failure on the part of the government to uphold the laws that we already have in place. Because we still deal with border security and implementation of the laws here. That's why you see states like Alabama pursuing immigration laws," said Roby.

Both the White House and Senate proposals still lack key details.

"There will be rigorous debate about many of the details and every stakeholder should engage in real give and take in the process. But it's important for us to recognize that the foundation for bipartisan action is already in place and if congress is unable to move forward in a timely fashion, I will send up a bill based on my proposal and insist that they vote on it right away," said Obama.

"Our office looks forward to participating in the debate and if there is an opportunity to improve upon what is already out there we will certainly do that," said Roby.

Conservative groups already are criticizing the proposal as amnesty for undocumented immigrants.

The group of 8 Senators sponsoring the legislation say once the language is agreed upon. The bill could come up for a vote as early as this summer.
