Ahead of Monday’s public inauguration ceremony president Barack Obama is now officially serving his second term in office.

Supreme Court Chief Justice John Roberts administered the oath Sunday just before noon inside the blue room at the White House.

First lady Michelle Obama and daughters, Malia and Sasha were there to witness the swearing-in.

The U.S. constitution requires that the president begin his second term by noon on January 20th.

The president will be sworn in a second time on Monday when he takes the oath of office in front of thousands of people at the U.S. capitol.

Vice-president Joseph Biden was also officially sworn-in Sunday at his home at the U.S. naval observatory.

Monday's crowd at the national mall is expected to be about half of what gathered there for president Obama’s first inauguration in 2009
