N.I.C.E Starts First Meeting of School Year
A challenge given by the Girard middle school principal to the nice group sparked conversations.
“The challenge is to have a community meeting in the housing complexes and to get to know some parents.” N.I.C.E president Mark Freeman said.
This is something the group is looking forward to because they say family and parental involvement in a student’s life is essential.
“As I travel around and go to different places in the community one of the main thrusts is parental involvement.” Freeman said.
Dothan city school superintendent Tim wilder was there for the meeting and brought up an issue that’s been on his mind.
Whether magnet schools are helping or hurting the students.
“My first thought of the magnet schools is that we have students that are flying that are doing well and then we have two schools that are struggling because we have students from different backgrounds from different neighborhoods.” Dothan city school superintendent Tim Wilder said.
Wilder says many of the students who are in non-magnet schools feel as if they aren’t as worthy as those who are.
Ideas popped up such as magnet schools being done away with, and putting honors tracks in schools instead.
Wilder wants to create a task force to see if keeping magnet schools would be a good or bad idea.
