The Alabama Dept. of Health has informed the hospital to continue collecting information, but not to notify any patients pending a conference call this afternoon.

DOTHAN, AL (October 18, 2012) – Flowers Hospital previously purchased medication from the New England Compounding Center, which have been taken off our shelves and are no longer being used, in accordance with FDA guidance. It is important to note that the hospital did not receive any of the steroid methylprednisolone acetate, which is the only substance that has been linked to the recent cases of fungal meningitis. Additionally, none of the medications we received from NECC is known to be contaminated or associated with any illness.
However, in an abundance of caution, the FDA has recommended that healthcare providers notify all patients who may have received any injectable medication produced by NECC. Our hospital is now reviewing our records to determine whether any patients received injectable medications prepared by NECC. This assessment is being completed as quickly as possible in order to promptly notify any affected patients.
The safety and well-being of our patients is our top priority. We will continue to monitor developments related to the NECC recall and to follow FDA and CDC guidelines.
