Connie Teauge knows all too well what happened at 1021 Blackshear Street almost 3-years ago.

“I was sitting on my porch and I heard some shooting and I heard some running and then I got up and seen the police coming from everywhere, the ambulance,” said Teauge.

On November 13th, 2008 those gunshots killed 28 year old Christopher Woods.

Dothan police say drugs were involved.

One suspect, 18-year-old Tauwan Townes fled but was in custody within 12 hours of the shooting.

The other suspect 23- year- old Cornelius Benton was on the run and authorities have been trying to track him down ever since.

“We actually got a very strong lead back in November that Benton was in Andalusia. we went over there with U.S. Marshalls Task Force out of Montgomery, spent about three days and confirmed that he actually had been living in Andalusia and basically ran him out of town and he fled to Crestview, Florida,” said Dothan Police Sergeant Will Glover.

Glover says the department has been working with authorities in Okaloosa County.

And Saturday a suspicious vehicle led to Benton’s arrest.

“The Crestview Police Department picked him up from what I was told he was sleeping in an abandoned vehicle. It was a suspicious vehicle and the sergeant on patrol, the vehicle had a broken window and the sergeant was just checking the vehicle out and Benton was sleeping in the back of the car,” said Glover.

Benton’s capture closed a fugitive case for authorities but even more, closure to Woods' mother who now lives in Montgomery.

“I spoke to her Saturday afternoon she actually started crying when we told her that Benton had been picked up she was very happy],” said Glover.

Just as happy as Teague said she would be.

Benton is expected to be extradited to the Houston County jail sometime this week.

He is charged with capital murder and could possibly face the death penalty if convicted.

His partner in the shooting, Townes, has already been sentenced to death.
