Driving tests are not required to obtain a motorcycle license in Alabama. As motorcycle deaths continue to rise, it's important for drivers and riders to pay attention.

Many people driving cars don’t look for motorcycles, Ft. Rucker Motorcycle Instructor Paul Maize said. “We have to ride like we're invisible,” Maize said.

That means looking out for people who aren't looking out for you. Riders should give themselves plenty of space from the cars around them.

“A lot of it has to do with perception and knowing what's going on,” Maize said. “Identifying the hazards and making a plan to avoid them, is better than waiting to the last second.

The downfall for many riders is losing control. Maize says teaching by repetition helps save lives by building natural instinct.

"Things that you need to know, are stopping, going, and cornering, so that way you can have those skills out there and you're muscle responds to it,” Maize said. “Having that muscle memory rather than having to think about it."

Along with building instinct, wearing protective gear such as helmets, jackets and gloves are a must. But the biggest safety feature of all is not getting distracted.

"The biggest problem we see all the time is drivers will put out right in front of riders without seeing them,” Ft. Rucker Motorcycle Safety Instructor Bruce Dinoff said.

If you ride a bike, experts say wearing a helmet will increase your survival rate in a crash by at least 37-percent.
