Mosquito Control

Before you call exterminators to get rid of those pesky mosquitoes, learn the five T’s: tip, toss, turn, tarps, and treat.

First, make sure to tip over any bowls of water. If you don’t think you have any standing water, think again.

"Where is the problem, where is the standing water at? And a lot of times, gutters,” explained David Davis from Mosquito Squad of the Wiregrass.

Then, toss excess leaves, grass, and firewood. You never know what's inside, so if you don't need it, toss it.

Mosquitoes shouldn't be overlooked. Last year, Alabama had severe cases of West Nile Virus. Some were in Houston County.

"From time to time in South Alabama, North Florida we will have a few cases. Unfortunately, you can't look at a mosquito and know whether or not it's carrying it,” said Corey Kirkland from the Houston County Department of Health.

Some viruses can attack the brain and nervous system, causing permanent damage.

However, even if you do everything right, it's hard to fight the bite. After all, they're picky.

Davis said, "They do know that they prefer blondes over brunettes, prefer dark clothing over light, females over males."

Prime feeding time is dusk and dawn. Yet, if you want to watch the sun rise, or enjoy an evening on the porch, try a eucalyptus-based repellent. However, make sure to rinse off any bug sprays before you go to bed.
