ORANGE BEACH, Ala. (AP) -- Police in Orange Beach say a police officer from Montgomery has drowned in the Gulf of Mexico.
Police say 34-year-old Montgomery police Lt. Rian Rider was taken by helicopter to a hospital in Pensacola, Florida, where he was later pronounced dead.
Police say emergency responders arrived at about 4:29 p.m. Thursday after getting reports of a swimmer in distress at the Cotton Bayou Beach Access.
Witnesses told police Rider was swimming with family members when he got caught in a rip current and was pulled under water and swept about 80 feet from the beach. He had been under water about two minutes when Orange Beach lifeguards pulled him out.
