The Oneida County (NY) Health Department has confirmed that a pet monkey was euthanized on Wednesday (11/10) after escaping its owner and biting an Oneida Castle, New York woman.

The monkey, named Jada, attacked Amy Fedchenko, who was playing with her son in their backyard.

When the monkey bit Fedchenko's finger, she punctured the skin.

Jada's owner, Robert Jones, was licensed to own the exotic pet by the Department of Environmental Conservation.

Jones eventually arrived on the scene and was the one who finally caught his pet.

While Jones did provide a copy of the eight-year-old monkey's rabies vaccination certificate, a sample was taken to be tested for the disease.

If Fedchenko was exposed to rabies, there is a ten day window within which treatment must begin.

Under New York State law, any time an animal that is not a dog, cat, ferret or livestock attacks a person, it must be immediately tested for rabies.

In order to check the animal, examiners need brain tissue, which can only be obtained after euthanization.
