Meningitis Case Reported in Bay County

A suspected case of meningitis caused by meningococcus bacteria has been reported to the Florida Department of Health in Bay County. The health department is in the process of investigating this report and has determined that at this time there is no threat to the general public.

It is not unusual for several cases of meningitis to be reported each year. The health department continues to maintain increased vigilance for any cases, additional or secondary, which may occur.

Symptoms suggestive of meningitis may be, but are not limited to, fever, headache, vomiting, stiff neck and rash. Bacterial meningitis has a sudden onset and the illness progresses rapidly. Early intervention is imperative for recovery.

Public health officials would like to reiterate that there is no threat to the general public.
