BIRMINGHAM, Ala. (AP) -- Police say an Alabama man held his elderly mother hostage inside their home and threatened to kill her in a standoff with law enforcement officers.
Al.com reports 42-year-old Mark Bryon McAvoy of Jefferson County was charged with kidnapping, assault and other crimes after sheriff's deputies used tear gas to end the weekend standoff. Authorities said Tuesday that McAvoy's 81-year-old mother, who is blind, was taken to a hospital for observation.
Deputies were called to McAvoy's home Sunday night. Neighbors said McAvoy came to them with blood on his hands and said he killed his mother. He then went home and barricaded himself inside.
Authorities said McAvoy claimed he had a gun and tried using his mother as a shield. It was not known Tuesday if McAvoy had an attorney.
