WALPOLE, Mass. (AP) -- A Massachusetts man convicted of beating his 7-year-old son so severely on Father's Day 2009 that the boy died days later has died in prison of an apparent suicide.

A state prisons spokesman says 41-year-old Leslie Schuler was found hanging in his cell at MCI-Cedar Junction in Walpole at about 4:30 a.m. Friday.

He was taken to the hospital where he was pronounced dead at 5:50 a.m.

Schuler pleaded guilty to second-degree murder this month in the death of Nathanial Turner. He was sentenced to life in prison with the possibility of parole after 15 years.

Schuler beat Nathaniel on June 21, 2009, and the boy died at a hospital two days later.

The boy lived with his grandmother in Eufaula, Alabama, but was spending the summer with his father.
