The Okaloosa County Sheriff’s Office has charged a Mary Esther man with selling hundreds of pounds of stolen brass shell
casings taken from firing ranges on the Eglin Air Force Base
28-year old Nathan Leo Nichols of 152 Deville Drive in Mary
Esther is charged with multiple counts of dealing in stolen property
and providing false information to a secondary metal recycler.
The Sheriff’s Office was alerted to the activity by an
investigator with Eglin’s 96th Security Forces, who said the casings
were most likely coming from ranges in Okaloosa and Santa Rosa
County in areas closed to the public.
The investigation revealed Nichols sold a total of 1632 pounds
of mostly 20 mm and .50 caliber military ammunition casings to
Metal Recycling Inc. on FIM Blvd. back in February and March
2012. He received more than $3500.00 for the stolen casings.
