Man Charged with Attempted Murder of Ala. Officer

TUSCALOOSA, Ala. (AP) --A 22-year-old man has turned himself in to the Tuscaloosa County Metro Homicide Unit on charges of attempted murder for hitting a police officer with his vehicle.

Austin Shields of Lake View was shot by a Brookwood police officer on March 5 after striking the officer with his car. Reports say that Shields turned himself in to the Tuscaloosa County Metro Homicide Unit when he was released Thursday from DCH Regional Medical Center. He was treated at the hospital for his gunshot wounds.

Shields has been released from the Tuscaloosa County Jail on $50,000 bond. The officer's name was not released.

Shields was shot by the police officer while he was lying on the ground after being struck by the vehicle.
