Man Charged with Attacking Sleeping Homeless Man

TITUSVILLE, Fla. (AP) -- A central Florida homeless man is recovering after authorities said he was beaten with a hammer while he slept.

Titusville Police officials said 52-year-old homeless vet David Gotshall lost an eye and suffered numerous fractures Friday when he was beaten, kicked and attacked with a hammer. He was hospitalized in critical condition.

Florida Today (http://tiny.cc/sqt8iw) reports John Paul Angelillo was charged with attempted first-degree murder in connection with the attack.

Authorities said the two have had verbal altercations in the past, but it's unclear what caused Friday's attack.

Sheriff's agents were patrolling the area when they saw a man holding a bloody hammer and Gotshall lying on the ground.

The agents provided medical care to Gotshall and detained the suspect until police arrived.
