Low Voter Turnout in Jackson County

WJHG -- Election night was big for school board members and county commissioners in Jackson County but voter turnout was pretty slim.

The County's Supervisor of Elections Sylvia Stephens tells us only about 30 percent of residents voted in last night's primary election.

More than 20 percent of that vote came from early and absentee voting, which Stephens credits with its convenience.

She said they're not sure how to get people to the polls.

"It's disheartening to know that we have the freedom to place our vote on who we want to put in office. We have that privilege. People died to promote that privilege," explains Stephens.

Stephens said they're now beginning work on the general election, and hopes through continued advertising voter numbers will be higher in November.
