Even though Breast Cancer Awareness Month officially begins in October, a local organization, the ordinary people society (T.O.P.S), is informing the youth on the importance of breast cancer.
T.O.P.S put their precious breast cancer artwork on display at their Breast Cancer Awareness Art Gallery Fundraiser.
The artwork was for sale but generous donations were accepted as well.
Studies indicate early detection of breast cancer increases a person's chances of surviving.
The American Cancer Society says, most doctors feel that early detection tests for breast cancer save thousands of lives each year, and that many more lives could be saved if even more women and their health care providers took advantage of these tests.
This group provides information and assistance to families regardless of their financial background.
"Our geographic from low income, they haven't been able to afford to go to places like the Boys and Girls Club, things of that nature. So it's important for us and the community to gather those the last, least, and the lost and teach them, " said Rodreshia Russaw.
The groups next event will be, "Jump Rope for Breast Cancer Day" on July 7, 2012 at 8 a.m.
