It's no secret Alabama has a high number of people living with diabetes.
That's why two organizations in the wiregrass decided to hold a seminar to teach diabetics how to live a healthier lifestyle.

Patti Sea along with forty other diabetics learned how to make their lifestyle, a healthy one.

“There are giving you a lot of good options and information you can go home and use when you go to cook and go shopping.” Diabetic Patti Sea said.

Flowers hospital and the Alabama cooperative extension system teamed up to show residents the best ways to manage their diet.

“We are really trying to work hard on prevention as well as helping people to cope with the disease. Because once you learn how to prepare your food and eat healthy you can live a healthy lifestyle with diabetes.” AL Cooperative Extension System agent Rosalind James said.

“I’m a mother of six and so I know the struggle of buying food and feeding them properly it’s a lot.” Sea said.

Feeding six children and managing to make a different meal for herself has always been a challenge...
But from this seminar, she learned it doesn't have to be.

“You can actually cook the same meal you would eat for your family, because being diabetic doesn’t mean you have to stop eating food, it just means you have to eat it in the right amount and especially the right time.” Sea said.

Using portion control and eating a diet for diabetes..can actually help your children fight obesity and keep them from having pre-diabetes.

A zumba instructor also came, to teach residents how to exercise while sitting in a chair.
