OPELIKA, Ala. (AP) -- Lee County's school board has named an interim superintendent as board members searching for a permanent replacement.

Reports suggestTuesday that Steve Miller will serve as superintendent to replace Stephen Nowlin.

Nowlin will head the Jefferson County school system next year.
Miller previously worked as an assistant superintendent in Lee County.

The Alabama Association of School Boards will perform a regional search for a replacement superintendent. Officials hope to find a replacement by June 1.

Miller will have no input on choosing the new superintendent and may not apply for the position himself.

The Lee County district operates 14 schools serving over 9,000 students in eastern Alabama.
