Keepsake Returned to Local Vietnam War Veteran Thanks to Dale County Man

DONALSONVILLE -- Twenty-five years ago, Ariton resident Garrett Maund found a unique lighter in his great uncle's dresser drawer. When he noticed the lighter was engraved with a man's name and a unit number, he decided to attempt to track down the veteran.

The lighter belonged to Mr. Buster Ausley. He is a Vietnam War veteran who lost the lighter more than 40 years ago after returning home. He said he basically gave up hope of ever finding the lighter.

This past Memorial Day, Maund found Ausley's information through farming records on the Internet. When he called the number, Ausley's mother answered and the rest is history.

"I had envisioned him being in a state far, far away, not here in Donalsonville or any part of the Wiregrass," Maund said.

Ausley served in the United States Air Force from 1970 to 1973.
