PHENIX CITY, Ala. (AP) -- Authorities say a Phenix City police officer found shot to death in a parking lot in the eastern Alabama town was 29-year-old Daniel Davis.

Deputy Coroner LaWanna Davis on Tuesday released the officer's identity and said results of an autopsy should be available early next week.

Authorities say the officer was found shot to death in the parking lot of the Carriage Hill Apartments Sunday night.

Investigators tell WTVM-TV that the officer was just getting off work and was still wearing his uniform when he was shot outside the apartments, where he lived with his girlfriend. They say the officer was shot inside an unmarked state vehicle.

Kendrick tells the Opelika-Auburn news that the shooting involved a handgun.
