Alabama’s unemployment numbers were released today. Houston County lead the Wiregrass with having the smallest number of unemployed residents.
Steve Turkoski, a Project Manager at the Dothan Area Chamber of Commerce says that one of the reasons why Houston County’s unemployment rate is lower than the national average is clear.
“Most jobs and most of the GDP contributions is from the metropolitan statically areas and we are in a metropolitan statistical area,” said Turkoski. “We would expect that our unemployment rate would be lower than the state average because there is so many rural counties out there.”
However, according to Turoski, improvement in the job market and in the real estate index helps keep unemployment low. Additionally, he also says that the number of businesses joining the chamber has been steady and that helps too.
