Houston County, AL - In recent years, The Houston County Sheriff's Office has handled an increase of animal neglect calls.
Sheriff Andy Hughes said they handle about two cases of neglected horses a month.
Now, they're turning to rescue groups for help.
Sheriff Andy Hughes said, "It's a great asset to us to be able to call them when we have one of these cases. The bring the trailers out. They pick up the horses. They bring them here. They get veterinary care for the horses. They feed them, and get them into good health. Then they adopt them into loving and caring homes."
Meet Lucky. She's one of 14 pretty lucky horses at Camp DD in Cottonwood.
"Usually they are fairly emaciated. We've had some come in that were very dehydrated. They had no source of water. They weren't being fed regularly," said Jacob Sellers with SEAL Cares and Animal Rescue.
Now they are being nursed back to health by the SEAL CARES AND ANIMAL RESCUE GROUP. It all started about two years ago.
Sellers said, "We started taking in a couple of senior horses that didn't have any other home. We realized we had such a big place and nice property, it just seemed right to start taking in horses that needed a good home."
They take in about 3 horses a month, and adopt out about the same amount.
Sellers said, "Makes me feel proud. Makes me want to come back and do more. Makes me feel like I'm making a difference."
To do this, they need help.
"There's always poop that needs scooping, things that need to be cleaned, horses that need to be bathed and brushed. They're always happy to get care," said Sellers.
Care, and of course a carrot.
The adoption fee is about $300 dollars. It may sound like a lot, but that covers vet and care costs. Also, you really know you're getting a healthy horse that truly deserves a loving home.
