Hit-and-Run Driver Sought in Death of Woman, 86

DAVIE, Fla. (AP) -- Authorities in Broward County are searching for a hit-and-run driver in the death of an 86-year-old woman who was struck while using her walker.

The Sun Sentinel reports that Rita Chiero had survived a heart attack, a stroke and a three-week coma only to be left for dead on the side of the road on Labor Day morning. Police say she was walking in her gated senior-living community in Davie when she was fatally struck from behind at about 11 a.m. Monday.

Family members told the newspaper that Chiero had moved from New York to Florida about 45 years ago, raised her only son and helped him raise her granddaughter, now 26. Her granddaughter was the last person to see her alive as she was placed in a fire-rescue truck. She was pronounced dead at Broward Health Medical Center. Chiero also leaves two great-granddaughters.

Anyone with information is asked to call Broward County Crime Stoppers at 954-493-8477.
