ABBEVILLE, Ala. (AP) -- A reserve deputy from southeast Alabama is facing charges of being in the United States illegally, and a sheriff isn't happy about it.

Federal court records show 46-year-old Kevin Dwight Venhuis of Abbeville is charged with being an illegal immigrant and possessing firearms without proper U.S. citizenship.

Henry County Sheriff Will Maddox says Venhuis has been a reserve deputy for 25 years, but he is also a Canadian citizen. His citizenship wasn't a problem because he was married to a U.S. citizen.

Maddox says that Venhuis' citizenship became an issue because he got a divorce. He was arrested Monday at a traffic stop.

Maddox disagrees with the charges, and he's upset over the arrest. Venhuis performs valuable computer work for the sheriff's department for free.
