Wiregrass residents learned how simple exercises can help improve their heart Saturday morning.

Its part of the Southeast Alabama Medical Center's "Hearts in Motion" program.

Participants received free cholesterol and thyroid screenings, and learned a couple of new dance moves.

The latest data shows 1-in-3 U.S. deaths are related to cardiovascular issues.

"Your brother, neighbor, sister, mother, father, someone has a cardiovascular problem," said SAMC Dr. Srinivasa Chennareddy.

"We appreciate anything they do to help themselves, so when they come to us we can help them live a little bit longer by checking their heart health out," said SAMC Health Education Coordinator Gloria Biddings.

For a list of healthy recipes featured at the event visit the Medical Center’s website at www.samc.org.
