BIRMINGHAM, Ala. (AP) -- A man from Uzbekistan is set to be sentenced in federal court in Birmingham after pleading guilty to plotting to kill President Barack Obama.
U.S. District Judge Abdul K. Kallon scheduled a hearing for Friday for Ulugbek Kodirov.
He faces up to 30 years in prison but could receive less.
In February, Kodirov admitted plotting to shoot Obama as he campaigned for re-election.
Kodirov said he came up with the plan after communicating over the Internet with a man he believed to be a member of an Uzbek Islamic group the U.S. classifies as a terrorist organization.
Authorities say Kodirov tried to buy a weapon, and the potential seller became a government informant.
Prosecutors say members of the Islamic community in Birmingham helped in the case against Kodirov.
