A battle between residents and city officials over plans to expand the Dothan landfill is headed to a courtroom next month.
Reports say plans to add 25 acres to the landfill site have been bogged down in a zoning fight as residents have blamed illnesses on years of drinking water from wells near the landfill.
As a result, the local Zoning Authority last December refused to take action on Dothan officials' request for a special exception to zoning rules.
The city the received a favorable opinion from Alabama's attorney general indicating it could move forward without zoning approval.
But a question raised by opponents caused state attorneys to withdraw that opinion.
Now an April 16 hearing is scheduled in Houston County Circuit Court.
