MONTGOMERY, Ala. (AP) -- Gov. Robert Bentley will have opposition in the Republican primary next year.
Former Morgan County Commissioner Stacy Lee George says he plans to run. George says his platform will include creating a state lottery to support public education and increasing the penalties for violating the state's open meetings law.
George was the first Republican elected to the Morgan County Commission and served two terms. He now works as a state correctional officer. George carries a pistol in a holster when off duty, and says he wants to be known as a strong advocate of the Second Amendment.
A spokeswoman for Bentley's campaign says Bentley welcomes George to the race, but he believes voters will be swayed by his record as governor, particularly on economic development.
