Atlanta Public Schools officials say more than two dozen middle school students are being evaluated for severe itching.

Fire Department Spokeswoman Marian McDaniel says students in a third-floor classroom at Brown Middle School began complaining of itchy and irritated skin around 12:15 p.m.

McDaniel says 29 students were taken to Hughes Spalding Hospital Monday afternoon for evaluations.

McDaniel says the third floor was evacuated and a hazardous materials unit tested the air for toxins.

McDaniel said test results were negative Monday afternoon.

Officials are unsure of what caused the students' skin to itch.

Atlanta Public Schools Spokesman Stephen Alford says the students were taken to the hospital as a precaution
